Can you fly out of your nest with the Birdhouse skateboards?
The next skateboarding manufacturer we are going to take a look at is the Birdhouse skateboards. The company was founded in 1992 by ex-members of Powell Peralta professional skateboarders Tony Hawk and Per Welinder. Its name is somehow connected with the Tony Hawk’s last name. Together with the Flip skateboards the Birdhouse company is a part of Blitz Distribution family.
The company produces skateboards, wheels, sports clothing and accessories. They have developed their own Black 6 technology –they add the 6th thicker ply to the skateboard deck’s construction which is supposed to add pop and assist the rider with flicks.
During last 20 years of professional riding Tony Hawk has gathered a pretty impressive skateboarding team, which includes himself, Shaun White and others. They have released several inspiring skateboarding movies and a video game series called “Tony Hawk’s Underground”. In this interactive game you may join one of the 5 skating teams to participate in skateboarding competitions.
A Birdhouse skateboard was one of my first real boards. I grew with it as a teenager and as a rider. Well, I would call it a middle-class board, because it is not really expensive, but the quality is not really high as well. The deck does not have a concave, the nose and tail chip easily. The 6th ply has definitely added to the deck’s weight, that is why it is a little too heavy. At the same time it is durable enough to learn to ollie and do other tricks. But it wears down quite fast. My board didn’t look so well after a few rides, but I was satisfied with it because I just started skateboarding.
Overall, I can give Birdhouse an average score for making tough and durable desks. Despite the fact that the wood has chipped a little too fast, I could do tricks with it and have really nice rides. I would recommend the Birdhouse skateboard to a beginner like me years ago. I think it is a good deck to learn with.
